A Living Statue

Having become popular again in recent years, this term covers the whole spectrum sentient stones, including trolls who have body modified to give them that chiselled look, as well as those malevolent statues that sneak up on you when you are not looking, through the to the most insidious of seaside souvenirs.

People or creatures that have been converted to stone are also included if there is still consciousness but no movement, such as those petrified by a gorgon or a basilisk. Often these studies are performed to return the individual back to flesh and blood, but often each case is unique and the lack of locomotion makes cases difficult to locate. The oldest existing case of a person being successfully returned was a 17th-century explorer who was instantly submitted to an insane asylum after spending 200 years simply listening to the noise of the sea. There are still statues to being recovered from the lair of Medusa, most of which are thought to relate to her PTSD (post turning into serpent deity) years.
