Thaumatology is the scientific study of magic. It is often compared to thamology, the broader scientific term referring to the general study of magical phenomena. While thamology may encompass history, folklore, and cultural practices involving magic, thaumatology focuses more narrowly on the principles, mechanisms, and experimental processes behind magical forces.

Many people mistakenly believe that magic operates outside the laws of physics. In truth, magic is deeply intertwined with the natural order—it does not defy the laws of reality, but rather functions as a lesser-understood aspect of it. Because of this, dedicated scientific inquiry is not only possible but necessary. The pursuit of knowledge in thaumatology helps bridge the gap between the seen and unseen, revealing the underlying structure of what we once called “the arcane.”

Across the Aetherworld, various institutions are devoted to this field of study. Some are prestigious universities found it major settlements, but alongside these, smaller institutions thrive—particularly in tribal regions—where localized magical traditions are preserved and expanded upon. Even lone shamans or village mystics may operate humble laboratories, hidden among their ceremonial lodges, where they isolate magical phenomena and experiment with new incantations or alchemical mixtures. These individuals often hold vast, practical knowledge passed down through generations, providing insights that rival even the most advanced academic research.

Thaumatologists play a crucial role in understanding how natural magic functions—how it flows, how it interacts with matter, and how it can be shaped or transformed. Their work leads to the creation of new spells, the development of magical potions, and sometimes the invention of entirely new magical disciplines.

However, not all magic is safe to study. Some forms are volatile, unstable, or inherently dangerous. Certain experiments can lead to unexpected explosions, dimensional rifts, or uncontrollable elemental reactions. Because of this, precision is vital.
